11th ANNUAL
SANTA MONICA TO OXNARD
NEW YEAR'S DAY RIDE

77 Miles

Robert Nam provided the following information.

8:45 AM MEET
9:00 AM START

San Vicente & Ocean Bl

Mostly flat terrain with a few rollers and occasionally wind. Pace is whatever you want to go - someone will join you. Ride up the coast to Las Posas Road (this is where PCH turns into a freeway - exit at Las Posas and turn left, cross the overpass and then back onto PCH back to Santa Monica.
  • One of the few days where there's very little traffic. Best time to enjoy scenic Malibu ocean view ride!
  • In the last few of years the group has swelled to 150+ riders so please be mindful not to bunch up on PCH.
  • Try to ride only 2 abreast. If you're not comfortable riding in packs, please go to the back of the group.
  • This is a 'free' ride and everyone is expected to be responsible for their own safety when riding with the group.
  • PLEASE PLEASE: if you plan to ride at the front please keep pace above 20 mph so the pack doesn't bunch up. If you plan to start with us but do a different loop or shorter loop DO NOT TURN AT THE FRONT! this will only cause confusion and probably a crash. turn off at the back of the pack.

STOPS

  • First stop to regroup is Trancas for water, restrooms, etc. at the Chevron station (if you prefer to continue without stopping, please go to the back and wait til everyone turns so you don't take people with you who may have to stop).
  • Second stop to regroup is at Las Posas bridge before turning around.

SAG - No sag year so please carry all necessary items to be self sufficient. there's plenty of places to stop for water, food, etc but you should carry spare tubes, pump, etc.

thanks and hope to see everyone on the road!
robert
ps - no ride if it rains

SPECIAL RECEPTION JUST FOR LA GRANGE MEMBERS

6:00 PM TUESDAY February 2, 2010
Herbalife Offices at LA Live
800 W. Olympic Blvd, Suite 406, Los Angeles 90015

The Club has received an invitation to a special reception just for club members at the international headquarters of La Grange’s new title sponsor, Herbalife next week, Tuesday, February 2nd, at 6pm. Most of you understand the importance of making a good first impression, so this is our chance. Getting as many Club members as possible to attend is our opportunity to show Herbalife the level of enthusiasm and commitment we have for the sport of cycling and our sponsors.

Herbalife CEO Michael Johnson will be in attendance and will make a brief presentation about the company and its plans moving forward including how cycling is an important part of Herbalife's plans. He is an avid cyclist and a great supporter of the sport we love, so it is important to show him and his team at Herbalife that we really value their commitment and belief in La Grange.

The offices are located within LA Live directly across from the Staples Center in downtown L.A (click here for directions in PDF format). If you have not been down there, it is a pretty great entertainment destination in its own right that is worth a look. We do need to provide an approximate head count so please RSVP to Marco Fantone at your earliest convenience so we can relay that information. I hope to hear from many of you and to see you there.

Please contact Marco Fantone or any member of the Board of Directors if you have any questions.

Thanks and we look forward to your attendance Tuesday night!

FAQ:

Q. What does it cost to race?
A. Just three easy payments of $0.00.

Q. Will road bikes be allowed?
A. Yes.

Q. Is shifting allowed?
A. Yes.

Q. What if I get a flat?
A. You may get one do-over if you experience an equipment failure or crash within the first lap.

Q.  I've never been on the track. Will there be a chance to practice?
A. Yes. There is a La Grange Practice Track Day and Clinic on March 27, one week before the race. Sign up online.

Q. Will track bikes have an advantage over road bikes?
A. Doubtful. A road bike will allow a rider to start in a small gear if desired.

Q. Will aero equipment make a difference?
A. Not as much as Race #2. Helmet and wheels may save a tenth of a second.

Q. WTF? 500M is a long distance to sprint! What happened to flying 200M on Westchester Parkway?
A. A standing start 500M TT at the track was chosen for safety purposes, distance and timing accuracy.

Q. What happened to a separate Men's Category 3?
A. Most of the 3's were faster than the 1/2's last year. We wanted to level the playing field.

Q. What category should I choose if I plan to upgrade during the season?
A. Whichever category you prefer!

Q. Do you need volunteers?
A. Yes! We need holders which we can all rotate doing, but especially two Timers in addition to Bill Mock.

Q. Who can participate?
A. Any current La Grange member (or UCLA Cycling Team member for the UCLA categories) in good standing. To renew your membership, click here: http://lagrange.org/membership_renewal.htm.

*Members of the UCLA Cycling Team can participate in the UCLA Team categories and are eligible for category prizes.

Velo Club La Grange

Velo Club La Grange is one of California's largest and oldest cycling clubs with over 400 members nationwide. The club was founded by Raymond Fouquet in 1969 and fields one of the top amateur racing teams in the United States. Past members include a Tour de France stage winner, an Olympic gold medalist, and numerous U.S. National and California state champions. La Grange is the recipient of the USA Cycling 2007 CLUB OF THE YEAR award.

La Grange promotes a doping-free competitive environment. Elite racers sign the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's 'Athlete’s Pledge for Clean Sport & Fair Competition'. La Grange has arranged to have a cardiac screening and assessment provided to Club members and elite racers for no out of pocket expenses.

Along with the Club's dedication to bicycle racing, the club welcomes new and inexperienced riders with a passion for cycling. La Grange is very active in the cycling and fitness communities. Our continuing public policy work with state and local government has led to major improvements in safety for all users of California roads. In addition, the Club has partnered with the Association of Blind Athletes and Meals on Wheels and sponsors an annual scholarship with the help of the Union Bank of California. La Grange enjoys the financial support of several corporations committed to promoting healthy and active living including Kahala Corporation.
