April 2013 President's message

April was a terrific month for your club. We had so many great performances by our racing teams. At every level we had winners and podium finishes and it seems it is just getting better as the year progress'.

One particular day really stands out, April 21. On that Sunday we had two events and La Grange really showed up for both. The City of Los Angeles put on a new version of CycLAvia. They closed down the entire length of Venice Blvd. from downtown to Santa Monica. The turnout was the largest ever with an estimated 150,000 + joining the fun. Among this tremendous show of the importance of bicycles were numerous LGer's. From what I am told it was lots of fun and very very crowded.

The other event was the Westchester Pkwy. Circuit Race. La Grange was represented in every category and came away with great results. To make it an even more exciting day, volunteers set up our Michelob Ultra tents and a bar-b-que. The made hamburgers and hot dogs and along with beer provided by Michelob Ultra it was a special opportunity for members and racers to hang out and really enjoy this outstanding event. We are hoping to do more of this at future race events this year. A big thanks to all the volunteers who helped out in the true spirit of La Grange.

Preparation for Brentwood Grand Prix is underway. Last week a group of members went door to door on San Vicente gathering approval signatures from the merchants. In about 2 1/2 hours we had 55 signatures which far exceeds the City of LA requirement and that takes care of one of the biggest issues we face every year. This years race will be bigger and better than ever. We hope to have a really exciting announcement about the event very soon. The race committee will be meeting on May 15 and we will then put out an announcement asking for volunteers. If you would like head up a committe on things like merchant relations, printing, t-shirt and hat production, race set up and tear down and many other things, get in touch with me and we will get you involved immediately. The event takes well over a hundred volunteers so please get involved.

On Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day) we will hold our annual ride. This is a great chance to ride and meet many new members of La Grange and get a little exercise before that big bar-b-que dinner. It is a casual ride and easy pace so plan to meet at Peet's in Brentwood at 8 am and we will head South to Palos Verdes and return.

The club continues to grow at a great pace. It is great to see and hear the enthusiasm of our members.

Always ride safe.
