This past Saturday, October 19th  was the Santa Barbara Century.  I recruited another strong team of ten La Grangers in hopes of defending our undefeated title of winning the Gibraltar Hill Climb for the third year in a row.

Each year the competition becomes more challenging and a few local teams from Santa Barbara put together strong teams in hopes of defeating us this year.

Unlike past years starting in rain and experiencing heavy fog on the mountain ridge, we rode under perfect sunny and warm conditions with some wind.  It actually became a bit too warm reaching the summit of Gibraltar at 88 degrees.

The team was up for the challenge as we started out at a very modest pace conserving our energy for the big climb ahead which began at the 40 mile mark.

Each year, the members (that's YOU) of Velo Club La Grange choose an outstanding member to receive the La Granger of the Year Award which is presented at the Annual Awards Banquet on Sunday, November 10, 2013.

This award acquires its prestige by being from you, the members of Velo Club La Grange. And it's about people who have benefited you and the club. So think a bit about your nomination. Think of those who have made truly valuable contributions to better the club for you over the past year, those who have gone out of their way for the club. Include efforts made on and off the bike - the deserving member who has served the club, represented the club positively, and enhanced the club experience for you and other members.

So if there is someone you' think deserves to be LaGranger of the year then go to the website link below and nominate someone from the club. Nominations are open now thru November 2nd at midnight. Once yours and others nominations have been reviewed, all elibgible candidates will be listed on the website for you to vote for from November 3rd thru midnight November 8th.

Who: Michael Relth, Robert Efthimos, Tim Petrvalsky, Jaycee Cary, James Brill, and myself Marco Fabrizio

What: Brentwood Grand Prix, SoCal Crit Championship

I'm going to start this off with a request for forgiveness due to the fact that I'm sure this will contain some profanity, so please forgive me. Earmuffs for the juniors!

Also it's a bit lengthy...

As many of you know the Brentwood Grand Prix is likely the hardest crit of the year. Personally I think it's the best race of the year. It's technical, fast, and the crowds are amazing. Oh, and did I mention we had a beer garden?  Yep! Thanks Michelob Ultra! Thats not to mention that it's going to be televised and we had an insane swing cam in turn one, which I didnt notice till hours after the race because well, turn one is a little bit of a doozy! Even the guy on the outside tries to apex F%$!*#$@&!!!!

Hellyer Challenge – National Track Race
Hellyer County Park, San Jose, CA
When – June 28-29, 2013
Who Raced – Vance MacDonald

This weekend I was privileged to spend the weekend in San Jose for the
Hellyer Challenge, one of seven events on the National Track Calendar.
This prestigious series attracts national talent, and sure enough
every field (Elite, Women, Masters) was brimming with National
championship sleeves.

Despite the record heat, I was quite impressed with all aspects of the
event: the facility, the organization, the races. The only blemish
being two spectacular crashes, one sending both Ironfly boys (Davy and
Phillips) to the hospital. They are doing reasonably well, but I
suspect will be off the bike for a bit.

The track itself is 333m, so flatter than we are used to here in LA.
The concrete is in better condition than both Encino and SD. The
overall facility, in a beautiful park, is certainly the most refined
of the three outdoor tracks. There is some nice funding and leadership
happening up there. And they have racing 3 nights/week.
