RACE REPORT: Peter Dorantes is State Champion

By Peter Dorantes

The SCNCA State Road Championship @ San Luis Rey Road Race
Nick, Victor, and I traveled down to Bonsall, California (East of Camp Pendleton) for the State Road Race Championship on April 8th. Nick raced the 55+ while Victor and I did the 50+ category which was four 14.8-mile laps for a 60-mile race. The 45+ and 50+ fields were combined so the race was fast from the beginning. Within the first lap and a half, several breakaways went up the road but none stayed away. On the second climb up the hill, I decided to try a breakaway and attacked at the finish line turnaround. This is a false flat, leading to a twisty descent. I rolled away pretty well on the descent and was able to get out of sight of the peloton. After about 5 miles solo, I was joined by none other than Rudy Napolitano who was racing the 45+ division. We were both motivated to stay away and worked very well together. We managed to stay away for two hard, fast laps, getting a gap of up to 2 minutes over the peloton. I went all out on the last lap, hammered the climb, and was thrilled to finish First.

(ed.– The State Championships in road racing is a big deal. The best and strongest racers show up here and everyone wants that Champs jersey to wear for the next year. This year…the jersey is Peter’s!!!)

MORE RESULTS
Nick – 6th (55+)
Victor – 14th (50+)

RECAP: The LAX Circuit Race

We had a great day Sunday at the LAX Circuit Race, co-sponsored by La Grange. It was dreary, cloudy, and downright cold but the races were heating up the place. La Grange had a nice cadre of racers in most races and Captain Laura Martin won a podium in the Women’s race! A huge thank you to Armin Rahm for putting the race on and all of the volunteers and racers who came out for the fun! Vive La Grange!

RECAP: The April LG50 ride

We had a great ride this month, with a jaunt up Latigo and then out to Trancas. The wildflowers are in full bloom and the temps were mild. Altogether a great day on the bike. April’s ride was led by Bodie Olmos with a generous SAG by el presidente, Jan Datomi. You are cordially invited to the next one in May, which will also celebrate National Bike Month! Hope to see ya there.

Meet the Member: Amanda Weinstock

Tell us about you, where you’re from, and what you like to do aside from cycling.
I’m a writer from Mendham New Jersey and live in Westwood. I like to travel, hike, shop, and watch bad TV. I’m 55 yrs old.

What type of rider do you consider yourself?
I’m new - just started last November. I’m riding in groups already, but still getting stronger.

What bike do you ride?
I’m on a Trek Domane SL6 Gen 3

How did you begin riding?
My brother, Gordon, was a Colorado police officer who was ambushed and killed while on duty. He was 51. He loved riding, and did the Steamboat, CO, Triple Bypass Ride on his birthday every year (110 miles and 10,000+ elevation)!

To honor him, I started riding with the goal to do the Police Unity ride, which begins on May 10 and covers 250 miles in 3 days, ending in Washington, D.C.

When did you join LG and why?
I joined LG to train and meet other riders. I plan to do more LG rides and events after the Police Unity tour - right now, (I’m) just focused on training!

What LG rides do you participate in?
One so far - the Friday morning LG coffee ride, this past February. I learned rides are always faster than people say. But everyone was really nice and supportive, and I was able to stay with the group even when the pace got hard.

What type of rides do you want to do next?
I'd like to do more intermediate “blue square” rides, not “black diamond.”

Let us all warmly welcome Amanda and cheer her on as she gets closer to her May target of the Police Unity Ride. You can support her cause by donating here:

The La Grange Photo Contest

Let’s do something a bit different. We know that taking photos and cycling go hand in hand. So, with all the wildflowers blooming and warm weather ahead, let’s have a contest. Submit your best cycling photo and maybe you’ll win the prize.

The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Gilbert’s El Indio and their photo will be displayed on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

Here are the rules:

  • Email a photo to nominations@lagrange.org between May 1st  and 10:00 pm May 31. Please submit a common file type that is easy to share.

  • Include your full name when submitting the photo.

  • The photo must be cycling-related. (Kudos to those who include La Grange or a sponsor in their shot, but it isn’t necessary.)

  • Photos which promote non-sponsor products or promotions are not eligible.

  • One submission per person.

  • The photo that gets the most votes wins.

  • SPECIAL NOTE: Please use caution and good judgment when taking photos on the bike. Riding with one hand, riding in adjoining lanes, and/or taking shots within a group can pose risks to you and others. We want you to stay safe.

Submissions will be displayed for member review on the La Grange website starting June 5th. Voting starts June 6th through June 20th until 11:45 pm. A ballot will be emailed to each member to vote for your favorite. One vote per member.
