La Voix - July 2017

Dear members,

Do you want to get more involved in the club? Is there a program or initiative that you think would benefit the club and its members that you'd like to take on? Whether it's leading a La Grange Century (thank you Rich Hirschinger), advocating for bike lanes (thank you Kory Klem, Jonathan Weiss, Jack Weiss, Rich Hirschinger, Susan Gans, Eric Bruins, Jay Slater and Mark Elliot) or smoking brisket and ribs and serving it up at this Sunday's CBR Criterium (thank you Patrick Barrett), everything La Grange does is done by volunteers. So if you'd like to volunteer alongside your fellow La Grange members and help the local cycling community, please reach out to me. And as always, ride and abide!

Bike Lanes in Beverly Hills

In case you missed it, La Grangers were instrumental in getting bike lanes on Santa Monica Bolvd in Beverly Hills! Great work!

From Rich Hirschinger:

Greetings,

[On June 20] the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously approved bike lanes for North Santa Monica Blvd in a vote of 5-0. This was a multi-year effort by bike advocates led by Mark Elliot, Eric Bruins, and Kory Klem. La Grange members who spoke included Bennett Ross, Jay Slater, Susan Gans, Jonathan Weiss, whose son also spoke, and me. They have not decided on what color to use to paint the lane, and the bike lane will be between 4’ 6’ and 5’ 0’ wide on both sides of the street.

Someone who counted said that 43 people spoke, 39 were in favor, 3 opposed, and 1 was cautious. Of the 3 that were opposed, two were former mayors of Beverly Hills. One of the former mayors, said that all the cyclists in favor of bike lanes were “professional cyclists,” so congratulations everyone, you are now a professional cyclist. 😂

For those that are interested, the meeting video replay is online at http://beverlyhills.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=5610 I could not play the video in Chrome but I could in Firefox. The numbers next to the names are the time stamps when the speakers started speaking.

From Jonathan Weiss:

It took a village, but La Granger/BH resident Kory Klem catalyzed and professionalized the multi-year effort.

Prior city councils earned Beverly Hills’ “Black Hole of Biking” label.  The first speakers last night were the former mayors defending their legacy: both opposed.

Kory got to know the BH electeds by serving on a blue ribbon commission, junior leadership group, walking with the Mayor, etc. (sacrificing some details here).  He also helped long-time campaigner Mark Elliot’s Better Bike blog, which details the story.

Kory waited out the entrenched opposition and made space for last night’s motion – literally – by helping convince BH to widen the road while deferring on bike lanes.

Two more shout-outs (and no slight to the other club members who pitched in):

La Granger/BH resident Bennett Ross got doctor’s permission to leave his bed to testify that he might not have been hit in NYC weeks ago had there been marked bike lanes putting the van driver (who veered into him when avoiding a swerving car) on notice that bikers were on that road.

Finally, aside from his estimable expertise in dentistry, I understand why Rich Hirschinger does so many professional seminars:  he delivers at the microphone.

Because it’s summer and the fondo season is approaching, we need to ride longer and harder. It is time to remind ourselves where all the water points are in the Santa Monica Mountains. Here is the famous interactive map locating all water points (fountains, outlets and restrooms…) known in the Santa Monica Mountains. Need to refill those water bottles before it’s too late? Just go to https://www.zeemaps.com/Water_points_in_the_Santa_Monica_Mountains to find the exact location of more than 44 water fountains you wish you knew existed (the map has been updated in 2017)!

Please contribute if you know of a water outlet that is still missing and add the appropriate marker to the map. You can also spread the word and share the map to all of your cycling friends. And remember, treat the water fountains and the area surrounding them with respect (no degradation, littering, etc). Enjoy!
