La Grange Battles @ the Tour of the Gila

This year’s Tour of the Gila in Silver City, NM, was EPIC! Battling adversity, our intrepid racers Nick Gillock, Victor Ayala, and Yan Lhert rose to the occasion. Nick and Victor raced the Men’s Masters-A race! This is a 5-stage world-class road race with aging but super fast category 1-3 racers. Despite being crashed out in the Crit Stage, Victor was able to hold on for 2nd Place GC in the 50+ bracket. (who says he’s just a sprinter!) The camaraderie alone is worth the price of admission. Great job, guys. We’re proud of you!!

RECAP: The May LG50 ride

We had a great ride this month to Griffith Park. Our recent spate of cloudy skies did little to deter a good-sized group of riders through the city and into the park. We had quite a few new faces which is always nice to see. Altogether a great day on the bike. May’s ride was led by Marco Fantone with a generous SAG by Deb Carabet. You are cordially invited to the next one on June 24th. Hope to see ya there.

Meet the Member: Taisha Walker

Where are you from?
I relocated to LA in 2020 and was previously living in Houston, TX. I spent 21 years in Houston before moving to LA so that is where I consider home.

Please use 3 words to describe yourself:
Ambitious, determined, funny

Favorite spot(s) in LA you would recommend to the club:
TW: Simply Wholesome for delicious prepared foods, smoothies, fresh fruit juice, and quality whole foods for purchase.

What do you do for a living?
TW: I'm a serial entrepreneur

What type of rider do you consider yourself? Are you still racing with the LG women's team? Any racing stories to share?
TW: I consider myself a competitive recreational cyclist. I am serving as co-captain with Laura Martin and Renée Hagen this season, however, I am not actively racing this season as I'm recovering from knee surgery in January. I plan to race with the team in future seasons.

My favorite racing story is how I got started racing. On Tuesday evenings I regularly participated in the Westchester Parkway ride and would see Tina Grant on the ride. Tina's wheel was one of my favorite wheels to hang on to on the parkway and we would briefly chat after the ride. Tina's strength on the bike was an inspiration and her words were always very supportive and encouraging. After a few weeks, Tina asked me if I was interested in "trying a race" and convinced me that it was only 30 minutes of my life. I agreed to try it one day with no real intention of actually racing. The next week Tina showed up at the parkway and handed me an LG kit to wear for the race coming up the following Sunday. Because I admired and respected Tina so much, I showed up to the race and bought a 1-day license. I had no idea what I was doing when I lined up at the start of the race, but I gave it a try and discovered a passion for the competitive thrill of bicycle racing.

Tell us about your bike.
TW: I am hands down a Pinarello girl! All of my bikes are named after Egyptian Goddesses. My race bike is Sekhmet, the Goddess of vengeance and war. She's a silver and black Pinarello Dogma F. My everyday bike is a crystal white Pinarello Dogma F named Isis.

How did you begin riding?
TW: I started with indoor cycling (spin) and took my riding outside on the road in 2010.

Do you enjoy other sports?
TW: I am a big NFL football fan, but do not actively participate in any sports other than cycling.

When did you join La Grange and why?
TW: I joined LG because of Tina. She represented LG in a way that made me feel included and supported as a member of both the club and race team.

What LG rides do you participate in?
TW: My favorite LG ride is the SB Century. I have also participated in the LG50 rides and the Nichols Canyon ride on Sundays.

What type of rides do you want to do next?
TW: I have traveled to a number of places in the US to participate in various sponsored rides and cycling events so I would like to expand my cycling travels to international destinations. In July, I will be embarking upon my first international bike trip as I travel with a group of cyclists to Ghana for 14 days. This trip will include tours to various historical and cultural sites in Ghana, networking and teambuilding with the Gladiators (a local cycling club), and of course a number of organized rides. One of the most exciting parts of the trip is that we are collecting cycling gear that we will donate to local cycling clubs in Ghana and have identified the first recipient of the Cycle Ghana Giveback campaign, who will receive a custom-built bike. The 2023 recipient is a junior female cyclist named Erica Sedzro.

NOTE: Anyone interested in donating gear and/or parts can reach out to me via email (taisha.walker@lagrange.org) or on my mobile at 832-574-9371. We are accepting donations for the 2023 trip through Jul 1, 2023. The link for anyone wishing to make a cash donation is included below.

Excerpt from the Cycle Ghana website that summarizes the trip as well as a few other links with additional information-

CycleGhana is your premier planner of Cycling and Culture Tours to Ghana, West Africa. Join us as we cycle from big cities to small towns, rivers to waterfalls, and markets to museums. CycleGhana Cycling and Cultural Tours offers experienced cyclists an opportunity to challenge themselves with a variety of routes from short, long, and high elevations to low elevations. With our main goal of helping promote cycling as a sport in Ghana and adjacent countries a trip with us will be an adventure you will never forget. CycleGhana also runs a nonprofit called CycleGhana Gives Back that collects funds and gear that will be donated during the trip.

How to retire your old gear and apparel

Remember the old adage, “One person’s junk is another’s treasure”? We all have a closet, bin, or garage full of old, seemingly unusable stuff. How can you tell when your gear is at the end of its life? This guide will help navigate reselling, donating, recycling, downcycling, or (as a last resort) disposing of your favorite gear.

A DIY Enhancement to Google Bike Routes
aka “Brentwood is Biking Hell”?

If you’ve ever used Google Maps to find a bike route, you quickly realize that many of the Google suggestions are actually lousy streets for cycling. Some routes are simply misrepresented while others are just plain terrible with heavy traffic and no cycling infrastructure! One local cyclist has taken matters into his own hands by creating his own Google Bike Routes map, utilizing better routing and more realistic descriptions. Watch the video above to see his analysis of the situation.

See the “new and improved” Google BIke Routing Map here!

NOTE: These maps are subjective and can be altered and adjusted by all users. It also only references the West side of LA. Add your route experiences!

RACE REPORT: Peter Dorantes is State Champion

By Peter Dorantes

The SCNCA State Road Championship @ San Luis Rey Road Race
Nick, Victor, and I traveled down to Bonsall, California (East of Camp Pendleton) for the State Road Race Championship on April 8th. Nick raced the 55+ while Victor and I did the 50+ category which was four 14.8-mile laps for a 60-mile race. The 45+ and 50+ fields were combined so the race was fast from the beginning. Within the first lap and a half, several breakaways went up the road but none stayed away. On the second climb up the hill, I decided to try a breakaway and attacked at the finish line turnaround. This is a false flat, leading to a twisty descent. I rolled away pretty well on the descent and was able to get out of sight of the peloton. After about 5 miles solo, I was joined by none other than Rudy Napolitano who was racing the 45+ division. We were both motivated to stay away and worked very well together. We managed to stay away for two hard, fast laps, getting a gap of up to 2 minutes over the peloton. I went all out on the last lap, hammered the climb, and was thrilled to finish First.

(ed.– The State Championships in road racing is a big deal. The best and strongest racers show up here and everyone wants that Champs jersey to wear for the next year. This year…the jersey is Peter’s!!!)

MORE RESULTS
Nick – 6th (55+)
Victor – 14th (50+)

RECAP: The LAX Circuit Race

We had a great day Sunday at the LAX Circuit Race, co-sponsored by La Grange. It was dreary, cloudy, and downright cold but the races were heating up the place. La Grange had a nice cadre of racers in most races and Captain Laura Martin won a podium in the Women’s race! A huge thank you to Armin Rahm for putting the race on and all of the volunteers and racers who came out for the fun! Vive La Grange!

Meet the Member: Amanda Weinstock

Tell us about you, where you’re from, and what you like to do aside from cycling.
I’m a writer from Mendham New Jersey and live in Westwood. I like to travel, hike, shop, and watch bad TV. I’m 55 yrs old.

What type of rider do you consider yourself?
I’m new - just started last November. I’m riding in groups already, but still getting stronger.

What bike do you ride?
I’m on a Trek Domane SL6 Gen 3

How did you begin riding?
My brother, Gordon, was a Colorado police officer who was ambushed and killed while on duty. He was 51. He loved riding, and did the Steamboat, CO, Triple Bypass Ride on his birthday every year (110 miles and 10,000+ elevation)!

To honor him, I started riding with the goal to do the Police Unity ride, which begins on May 10 and covers 250 miles in 3 days, ending in Washington, D.C.

When did you join LG and why?
I joined LG to train and meet other riders. I plan to do more LG rides and events after the Police Unity tour - right now, (I’m) just focused on training!

What LG rides do you participate in?
One so far - the Friday morning LG coffee ride, this past February. I learned rides are always faster than people say. But everyone was really nice and supportive, and I was able to stay with the group even when the pace got hard.

What type of rides do you want to do next?
I'd like to do more intermediate “blue square” rides, not “black diamond.”

Let us all warmly welcome Amanda and cheer her on as she gets closer to her May target of the Police Unity Ride. You can support her cause by donating here:

The La Grange Photo Contest

Let’s do something a bit different. We know that taking photos and cycling go hand in hand. So, with all the wildflowers blooming and warm weather ahead, let’s have a contest. Submit your best cycling photo and maybe you’ll win the prize.

The winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Gilbert’s El Indio and their photo will be displayed on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

Here are the rules:

  • Email a photo to nominations@lagrange.org between May 1st  and 10:00 pm May 31. Please submit a common file type that is easy to share.

  • Include your full name when submitting the photo.

  • The photo must be cycling-related. (Kudos to those who include La Grange or a sponsor in their shot, but it isn’t necessary.)

  • Photos which promote non-sponsor products or promotions are not eligible.

  • One submission per person.

  • The photo that gets the most votes wins.

  • SPECIAL NOTE: Please use caution and good judgment when taking photos on the bike. Riding with one hand, riding in adjoining lanes, and/or taking shots within a group can pose risks to you and others. We want you to stay safe.

Submissions will be displayed for member review on the La Grange website starting June 5th. Voting starts June 6th through June 20th until 11:45 pm. A ballot will be emailed to each member to vote for your favorite. One vote per member.

RACING NEWS

RACE REPORT: The Victorville Stage Race

By ChatGPT (LOL)

The Victorville Stage Race
Four LG racers in the TOP 10 Overall

The Victorville Stage Race was a challenging and exciting event that tested the skills and endurance of all the cyclists who participated. With a 5.5-mile uphill time trial, a 58-mile road race at the George Air Force Base, and a 45-minute criterium in downtown Victorville, the race provided a variety of challenges that kept the cyclists on their toes.

Peter's performance was particularly impressive, as he WON the opening time trial in the Masters 50+ and managed to hold on to finish in 4th place overall in the omnium. His strength and determination were evident throughout the race, and he proved to be a formidable competitor in every stage.

The road race itself was characterized by challenging conditions, with strong winds and difficult terrain making every stage a true test of the cyclists' abilities. However, the organizers did an excellent job of providing a safe and well-organized environment for the participants, ensuring that everyone had a fair and enjoyable race experience.

Morgan James was super strong and consistent. As the only LG woman racer present, she fought like a warrior in every stage. She got 4th in the TT and had the best LG road race performance with an impressive 5th on a hilly, windy, and frigid course.

Nick did what he does best, putting up a stellar 4th place in the TT. Victor also put in a solid performance and is always the model of consistency and efficiency, finishing in 10th place overall in the omnium. New LG racer, Denny Chavez, held his own in the Cat 5s, racing hard and also finishing 10th overall.

Overall, the Victorville Stage Race was a well-run and highly competitive event that showcased the best of the region's cycling talent. With its challenging terrain and varied stages, the race provided a true test of skill and endurance, and it was a pleasure to watch the athletes push themselves to their limits. Congratulations to Peter and Morgan for their impressive performances, and to all the participants for a great race!

All LG Racers: Morgan James, Peter Do, Victor Ayala, Nick Gillock, Denny Chavez
Special guests from Hungary: Áron Éger, Balázs Szarvas

The LG Women’s Team Camp

The La Grange Women’s Team had their staycation team camp in March. The weather kept some away and put a kibosh on their Sunday racing clinic but didn’t dampen the spirits of the racers who participated. A big part of team camps just bonding. Teams that bond together, win together. And this team has the most fun in races and training. They are super inclusive and welcome all new racers. RECAP: The March LG50 ride

Two LG50s in one month; oh, the embarrassment of riches. The official March LG50 was led by Lisa G and Renée Fox with an amazing SAG by David Newcombe and Jess (?). We had a great group with lots of new faces and rolled to Griffith Park. The weather was amazing and a nice respite from the rain. The roads were in remarkably good condition. The perfect day was only made better when we celebrated the birthdays of Lisa, David, and Larry L. at Gilbert’s El Indio. The food was great, the cocktails were flowing, and there was CAKE! Are you having FOMO yet? Come to the next one!

RECAP: The February LG50 ride

We had our postponed February LG50 ALSO in March. Dan Mitnick led a group of merrymakers out to the valley in what turned out to be a very fun and interesting loop. Again, we had several new faces. (we love and welcome new faces)! It was chilly but really nice with spectacular scenery. Big thanks to Robert and Simon Yates for the SAG. (not THAT Simon Yates. He could never keep up).
